Iodine
Toxicity Is Clear
In regard to the iodine debates, I’d like to point out just a few facts. Over the last century, the toxicology of iodine has been clearly established. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has compiled a 216-page document listing thousands of cases of iodine toxicity, some as low as 540 mcg daily (see http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp158-c3.pdf). Even casual perusal of this document will make it apparent that we may as well be debating whether or not aspirin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. Regardless of how many patients Dr. X has “safely” treated with iodine, the documented side effects still exist. To argue that “iodine is safe because I’ve treated X number of patients with no problems” reminds me of the joke about the optimist who fell off the Empire State Building. After falling for 50 stories, he was heard to say, “So far, so good!” Since my practice focus is thyroid disease, I’ve seen numerous patients who have experienced thyroid disease triggered by iodine toxicity. Accounts of my experiences can be found here: http://goo.gl/xdVDG.
